Start With the Recommended Minimum

According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), adults should aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each day. That adds up to around 150 minutes per week. This is a strong starting point for general health and fitness. However, if your main goal is weight loss, you may need to do more than this baseline.

How Much Walking for Weight Loss?

For people with obesity who want to lose weight, or for those trying to maintain weight loss, ACSM recommends 200 to 300 minutes of physical activity per week. In walking terms, that equals around 3.5 to 5 hours each week. A practical goal is a 45 to 60 minute walk on 4 to 5 days per week. The more consistent you are, the better your results are likely to be.

Why Walking Intensity Matters

If you want to walk to lose weight effectively, pace matters too. A moderate walking pace works well for most people. You should walk fast enough to raise your heart rate, but still be able to hold a conversation. Moderate intensity is usually around 50 to 70% of your maximum heart rate. On a perceived exertion scale from 0 to 10, aim for around 5 or 6.
